Kesi is a style of embroidery consisting of vertically woven raw silk and horizontally woven colored and boiled silk. This technique results in a very prominent, relief-like texture of the embroidery. Because of their expert craftmanship and intricate production, kesi is known as the "divine silk".
This pair of kesi embroidery has blue kui dragon patterns at the four corners, brown kui dragon patterns at the four sides, and white peony patterns in between. At the center is a patterned pair of fish surrounded by five red bats, which are connected by the peony patterning. The dual fish pattern symbolizes buddha's merciful eyes, which are held to be all seeing and full of wisdom in the Buddhist faith. "Fish" is also a homonym of "surplus", which indicates bountiful harvest and a fulfilling love life. "Bat" is a homonym of "fu", meaning blessing; a reference to the five blessings of longevity, wealth, health, morality and natural death. Considering the inclusion of both, kui and peony patterning, and its extraordinary elegance, this pair of embroidery is likely from an imperial palace.
