双鱼一大一小，小鱼依附于大鱼一侧，活泼可爱；头尾相连，辗转交缠。鱼之形象所用颇多，在中国古代，鱼跟雁一样可作为书信的代名词。古人为秘传信息，以绢帛写信而装在鱼腹中，这样以鱼传信称为“鱼传尺素”；隋、唐二代，朝廷颁发有一种信符，符由木雕或铜铸成鱼形，时称“鱼符”、“鱼契”；由于要把传递的信息书写在符上，故又称为“鱼书”。使用此符时，把它剖为两半，双方各执半边鱼符，以备双方符合作为凭信。而宋时，显贵达官皆身佩以金制作的信符，称之“鱼符”，以明贵贱。且因“鱼”与“余”谐音，所以鱼多象征富贵；“如鱼得水”则常用来描述工作和生活和谐美满、幸福、自在。
