Robert-Alfred Lienhard Brocade Engine, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, c. 1901, tri-foot shaped wooden bed, with four-spoke iron fly wheel, cast iron bed plate, rocking headstock with five rosettes, horizontal mounted chuck, tool slide, geared cross-slide, geared reducing machine with thirteen 5 1/2-in. dia. medallions, bed wd. 48 in. Note: R-A Lienhard was established in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neuchatel, Switzerland, in 1895. They produced engine-turning (or Brocade) machines to supply watch and jewelry makers. His first patent was established for the design of a machine that produced background patterns and low-relief foreground patterns, the first of its kind. Nicholas S. Edwards has compiled a history of Lienhard Brocade engines that was published in the Society of Ornamental Turning's Bulletin #142.
