Alexis Kreyder (Alsace France 1839-1912); Oil on canvas on stretcher, signed lower left corner "A Kreyder", "Still-Life with Poppies" (the flower associated with Morpheus, the God of Sleep & Dreams); in custom gold leaf French Regence frame. Height of art 40 3/4 inches ( 103.5 cm.) X width of art 30 1/2 inches ( 77.5 cm.). PROVENANCE: From a New York Private Collection. NOTE: Known for his still-life paintings of flowers, Alexis Kreyder moved to Paris in 1859 and worked learning his craft for two to three years. Between 1863 and 1864 he worked with Théodore Rousseau and the Barbizon School producing works for Prince Demidoff. Alexis Kreyder first exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1863 and continued to exhibit for the next three decades. He received a gold medal in 1869, a second class medal in 1884 and a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 when he was also made a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur. His paintings are in Alsatian museums, the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Baltimore Museum and the Strasbourg Museum.
