North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large wheel thrown Fassi style pottery lidded jar known as a jobbana, glazed with a stunning blue-on-white patterns and embellished with brass rims, knob, and foot fittings. The lovely geometric and stylized motifs that resemble scrolling foliage are painted in a deep cobalt blue on a white ground and are influenced by Islamic art and Chinese porcelain. The bowl has a ring foot and a bell-shaped lid with a finial knob, that fits flush within the rim. Hammered sheets of brass are adhered to the exterior edges as nice accents and protective covers. The jobbana vessels were traditionally used for churning milk, but later became serving containers for soup, especially during celebrations and serving guests and family at Ramadan. The base is marked "FES:R."
