North America, United States, ca. 1920s to 1930s CE. A rectangular wooden box bearing dozens of mosaic-patterned panels formed from hundreds of glued, headless matchsticks. The vessel bears a hinged lid decorated with a large pelican holding a fish as well as a bare tree next to a river, the front of the chest with a central lock and slots for 2 buckles, and a pair of leather handles on the side walls. Both the interior base as well as the bottom of a removable tray are lined with tin foil, and the walls of each bear remains of applied paper advertisements of women, some nude.
