Southeast Asia, Philippines, Spanish Colonial influence, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wood santo of Saint Francis of Assisi with a head sculpted from the bone of an ungulate. The holy figure is depicted in his traditional hooded cloak with a robe tied at his waist and tonsured coiffure. Gazing solemnly forward, he stands barefoot on an integral plinth, holding out both arms, perhaps to display his stigmata.
