Pre-Columbian, Peru (central highlands) and Bolivia (Lake Titicaca region), Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a planar base, a bowl-shaped body with a rounded shoulder surmounted by a recumbent feline, an arching handle, and a cylindrical spout with a thick rim. The feline laying atop the body is perhaps a jaguar given its large paws, striped tail, spotted body, and characteristic visage. To either side of the relaxing creature is an amusing depiction of a saurian or another jaguar, each with bared fangs and a raised tail, and above the spout emanating from the jaguar's back is a repeating step motif. A fine composition presented in orange, black, red, and white hues. Size: 5.2" W x 6.2" H (13.2 cm x 15.7 cm) Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
