A gui is a type of dining utensil and ceremonial vessel during the Shang and Zhou, and is usually used in conjunction with the ding as a part of royal etiquette. In a formal setting, the number of guis and dings one can use is tied to his hierarchical status, hence the phrase "nine dings and eight guis for a king" which indicates absolute power. During Song dynasty, censers which take the form of gui were produced, indicating the appreciation of antiquity at the time. This censer has a glaring mouth, a bulging belly, a pair of curved square handles on the belly, a high foot ring rolling outward. It has a well-aged patina which is pleasing to the eye. At the bottom is the "Leifeng Changzhu" four-character seal mark. While this is not an imperial seal mark, it doesn't mean the censer was made for commoners. In fact, wares like this were usually commissioned by officials or the wealthy, made with finer material and superior craftsmanship and were the finer pieces among wares of the same kind.
