佛经谓观音菩萨有三十三个不同形象的法身。佛典《法华经•普门品》中记，水月观音为三十三观音法身之一，观水中月影状的称水月观音。水月观音题材始于唐代流行。唐代画家周昉曾称水月观音：颇极丰姿，全法衣冠还近闾里；衣裳劲简，彩色柔丽；菩萨端严，妙创水月之体。张彦远在《历代名画记》中载：胜光寺，塔东南院，周昉画水月观自在菩萨、掩障菩萨、圆光及竹。敦煌莫高窟有见许多水月观音像。 此作品黄金之制，修饰的观音似被月光包围，容颜慈悲，披着天衣，佩璎珞飘带，坐下修饰如祥云，刻画得灵动之至，整体给人以飘逸的仙境之感。
