Description

JUAN GENOVÉS (Valencia, 1930).Untitled.Silkscreen on paper. Printing proof.Without signature.Measurements: 70 x 50 cm.Artist of great expressionist character, he is trained in the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos, encouraged and advised by the artist Martínez Verchili. It is a stage of initiation towards painting in which he is supported by Esuebio Sempere and Custodio Marco. In his first stage, one must take into account the social context in which Spanish society found itself at that time, under a regime that left its mark on every institution. For this reason, Genovés' apprenticeship was influenced by the conservatism and academicism of the regime. Thanks to the grant he received in 1951 from the Valencia Provincial Council, Genovés was able to start a series of trips both nationally and internationally. This is a period of projection and growth, at this time he already belongs to the group "Los Siete" (1949), which will be the artist's first collective experience. During his stay in Madrid (1952), he began to exhibit regularly in the Alfil Gallery, where he held his first individual exhibition and where, later, once in the Parpalló Group, they would organise group exhibitions. In the sixties Genovés starts to look more deeply into Informalism and considers figuration as an antidote to this movement. The different experiments and hypotheses that arise are carried out with the Hondo Group (1960).Genovés' artistic life goes through various projects and artistic works until he reaches a moment of crisis when he decides to turn his attention to painting from a political and social point of view, developing an artistic theme that is close to the workers movement. In this way, he worked from two points of view: the representation of a solitary individual, and its extreme, the staging of the multitude, this silkscreen being an example of this. These are compositions altered by the movement and hustle and bustle of people, located in a concentric and apparently non-existent space, where actions are carried out for protest purposes. As we can see, the Valencian artist evolves and renews the art he works with, reflecting on his role and function in and for society, but not only for Spanish society, but for society all over the world. On two occasions Genovés participates as a representative of the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. During his second participation in 1966, the Marlborough Gallery took an interest in his work and allowed him to exhibit his work abroad. His career has been very prosperous, becoming known all over the world, participating in art fairs such as ARCO, TEFAF, Art Basel, as well as exhibiting in galleries in New York, Brazil, Miami, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Portugal, to mention just a few of the places that have been familiar with his work.
