Obertribunalrates Liel, 1865, cat. no. 36The present work depicts a miracle from the Gospel of Matthew 8:5-13 and the Gospel of Luke 7:1-10 in which a Roman centurion asks Christ for his help because his servant is ill. Little is known about Jakob Ernst Thomann von Hagelstein but according to art historian Joachim von Sandart's Teutsche Academie from 1680, he was born in Hagelstein, a small village outside Lindau. He made a trip to Italy in circa 1605 visiting Naples, Genoa and Rome, where he was clearly influenced by the work of Adam Elsheimer, before returning to Lindau 15 years later.
