Maurice Picaud (French, 1900-1977) La Danse, After the Folies Bergère Painted and gilt plaster decorative panel; 1930s (19 3/4 x 19 1/8 in. (50.2 x 48.6cm)) Provenance"Early 20th Century Design," Rago Auctions, Lambertville, January 20, 2018, Lot 779.Property from a Private Pennsylvania Collection. This relief is a smaller version of the decorative panel Picaud ("Pico" pseudonymously) created for the facade of the Folies Bergère in Paris in 1926. The famed Russian dancer Lila Nikolska (1904-1955) posed for the design. Frame: 29 1/4 x 28 7/8 x 1 1/2 in. Overall in very good condition; panel is laid down on board and secure; one diagonal hairline crack approximately 4 in. long radiating inward from lower right corner; overall light wear and minor chips to edges of relief; earlier gilding mainly visible at edges, extensive overpainting.
