China, 18th/19th century, important, very well carved green jade sculpture representing na elephant, gilt bronze pedestal, relief lotus scrolls and fretwork decoration. The jade of spinach green colour with slightly darker veins and minor calcification areas. Such elephants were mostly made in pairs and would have flanked na imperial throne as can be seen in Chuimei Ho and B.Broson, Splendors of China's Forbidden City: the Glorious Reign of Emperor Qianlong, London, 2004, p.50.
