A JADE CARVING OF A ‘ROLLING’ HORSE OR RECUMBENT HORSE, MǍ 马 CHINA, QING DYNASTY Carved out of a single piece of light brown jade with dark brown accents, infusions or inclusions. This horse is depicted rolling on its back. Its forelegs and hind legs are tucked underneath, and so are its head - tucked between its two forelegs - and its tail - tucked between its two hind legs. Detailed flowing hairwork to the mane and tail, rendered by incisions. A tiny hole has been drilled right below its chin for suspension purpose. L: 4,7 cm Weight: 37,3 grams Notes: 1. This charming piece is striking for its animated playful pose. Jade carvings of horses in reclining poses first appeared in the Jin (1115-1234) and Yuan dynasties (1279-1368), such as one in the British Museum, London, illustrated in Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, pl. 26:15, where the author notes that these carvings have been traditionally attributed to the Tang dynasty (618-907) despite the lack of similar excavated examples. 2. For the concept of a jade carving of a rolling or recumbent horse, please refer to the one sold at CHRISTIE’S Hong Kong, China, 2015-10-07, lot 3652. 卧马玉雕 中国,清代或更早 NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. In relation to Condition Reports, whilst we make certain observations on the lot, which are intended to be as helpful as possible, references in the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance. The absence of such a reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. The condition report is an expression of opinion only and must not be treated as a statement of fact. Measurements and weight are approximate and the potential bidder may re-ask it to be checked when asking for a condition report.
