Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "World Flags Forming Maple Leaf" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 34c International Year of Peace stamp issued September 16, 1986. Born from the ashes of World War II and nurtured by the need for a world forum to mediate international disputes, the United Nations was organized in 1945. Since then, the United Nations has been committed to fulfilling its charter by giving member nations an opportunity to work out their differences so that war can be avoided, and by promoting peaceful cooperation and equality among its members. Thus, in recognition of the work the U.N. has done in preserving and advancing world peace, member nations declared 1986 as the "International Year of Peace." This artwork features a stylized representation of the Canadian national symbol -- the Maple Leaf. The Maple Leaf bears at least one color of every U.N. member's national flag. In the foreground of the Maple Leaf a dove symbolizes the hope for world cooperation and peace. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10524)
