STATUE DE DURGA MAHISHASURAMARDINI EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE INDE OCCIDENTALE, XVIIIE SIÈCLESTATUE DE DURGA MAHISHASURAMARDINI EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVREINDE OCCIDENTALE, XVIIIE SIÈCLE20 cm (7 7/8 in.) high A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF DURGA MAHISHASURAMARDINI WESTERN INDIA, 18TH CENTURY 印度西部 十八世紀 屠牛魔者難近母銅像Published:Arman Neven, Sculpture des Indes, Brussels, 1978, p. 220, no. 161.Exhibited: Sculpture des Indes, Société Générale de Banque, Brussels, 8 December 1978 - 31 January 1979. Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970sThe sculpture depicts the classic iconography of Durga slaying the buffalo-demon Mahisha with her trident. However, with a charming variation on her classic depiction, the artist rests the goddess' right foot on the back of her lion vehicle, who roars in victory while crushing the decapitated head of the demon buffalo under his right paw. A miniature yoni-and-lingam surmounting her headdress draws her affiliation with Shiva. Compare with a related example sold at Christie's, New York, 22 March 2011, lot 448.
