Description

A Chinese copper red bowl with a 6-character Qianlong mark and of the period. Dimensions are: 3 1/4 inches tall X 7 1/2 inches wide, 8.25 cm X 19.05 cm. All measurements are approximate.
This bowl is nicely and evenly coated by glaze, and its shape is well defined- a wide-open mouth, a firmly curved belly, and a stumpy foot-ring. Six-character underglaze blue Qianlong seal mark on the bottom of the bowl. The inside of the bowl is glazed white, while the body is evenly glazed in rich copper red, which synergizes nicely with the tightly shaped body, making the vessel a seamless whole. Jihong (sacrificial red) was a type of glaze that used copper as a colorant and was fired in a high-temperature reducing flame. During the Hongwu period of Ming Dynasty, the technique of jihong production would reach its maturity. During Qianlong period, jihong porcelain was the mainstream among the red glaze porcelain products. Jihong porcelain wares were usually finely made. Most official kiln wares were marked with seal mark of six characters in three lines “Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi” (made in the Qing Dynasty Qianlong period). In some cases, hall marks were also used. A similar example can be found in the Palace Museum Collection, No.00114291. A similar example was sold at Sotheby's New York in March 2012 as lot 238.
