A Chinese falangcai bowl dating from the Republic period or Earlier, featuring butterfly roundels. Dimensions are: 2 1/2 inches tall X 5 inches wide, 6.35 cm X 12.7 cm. All measurements are approximate.
The body of the open bowl is deep and enamelled white, decorated with five unique enamel butterfly medallions- one on the inner-bottom, four on the outer sides. The medallions all differ from each other with each of them being a combination of two types of butterflies and some flora unique to a certain season. The flora and butterflies create scenes that are both delicate and charming. The bottom of the bowl is inscribed with a Yongzheng four character reign mark in blue enamel on white glaze. From late Qing Dynasty to Republic of China, contemporary artworks imitating ones from the past prevailed, especially porcelains made with characteristics unique to Yongzheng period. The falangcai porcelains however, would be so finely crafted that they would look the same as ones from Yongzheng period, if not better. Such is the same case for this bowl- the overall craftsmanship is the same of a top-class Yongzheng porcelain, with the use of color surpassing the later. Yongzheng style famille rose porcelains of Republic of China have great collection value, and this piece is one of the best among them. A similar example can be found in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, no. 1930.261. Similar examples can also seen in the collection of the British Museum, no. 1936, 0413.26, and the Palace Museum Collection, no. 00074776.
