A Chinese blue and white powder blue ground vase dating from the Kangxi period featuring scenes of flowers, birds, and insects. Dimensions are: 17 1/2 inches tall X 8 1/2 inches wide, 44.45 cm X 21.59 cm. All measurements are approximate.

The phoenix-tail vase (or yanyan vase) is named for the shape of its lower half being similar to a phoenix's spreading tail. The form evolved from the gu vase of Yuan and Ming dynasty. This vase is mostly covered with blue glaze, except for a total of six panels, within which are illustrations of flowers from the four seasons and birds over a white back ground. Such unique artistic expression was quite popular during the Kangxi period. The overall application of the glaze is consistent, and the color is pure. The flora, birds and insects are meticulously and vividly painted. The foot of the vase is an exposed, double stacked foot ring, while the underside is glazed white and marked with a double-ringed blue and white seal mark. Overall, the vase is elegant and charming, and it could have produced in an official kiln. Kangxi phoenix-tailed vases are mostly blue and white or wucai, thus windowed powder blue vases are very rare and unique. Similar items can be found in the Beijing Palace Museum as no.00088127; no.00114101; and in the collection of the British Museum as no. 1942, No. 1208.2. A similar example was sold at Christie's Paris in June, 2020 as lot 120.

清康熙 灑藍開窗青花花鳥鳳尾尊

鳳尾尊由元、明時期的花觚演進變而來，因其腹下部至足底外延似鳳尾而得名。本器器型為兩段式鳳尾尊，通體藍釉打底，全身共有六處開光，白底並繪以四季花鳥紋，這種獨特的藝術表現手法在康熙時期尤為盛行。整體藍釉均勻，發色純正，所繪花鳥草蟲運筆流暢，精巧細膩，栩栩如生。底圈為二層臺圈足，圈足露胎，底 部施白釉，並落有青花雙圈款，規整嚴謹。整體風格雍容典雅，氣度不凡，應為康熙官窯出品。康熙鳳尾尊存世多為青花或五彩，像此尊全身灑藍開光的紋飾非常稀有，其觀賞性獨具一格。
