Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery canteen vessel with a rounded body, presumably not intended to stand upright on its own, but rather suspended via a cord around the neck. The surface is burnished and slipped in an orange hue, and the upper midsection and neck are painted with supernatural beings in tan, white, red, and gray hues outlined in black. The highly stylized gods are a hybrid mix of humanoid bodies and condor / eagle heads with massive beaks, one holds a snake in its clawed hand, and the other has a human trophy head.
