Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 BCE to 500 CE. A rare and stunning carved-wooden sculpture of tall, rectangular form depicting a mother embracing her child. Minimalistic and highly stylized, the standing female presents a haunting visage of two almond-shaped, hollow eyes, a straight, incised mouth, and a pointed chin on a flat-topped, narrow head. Her trapezoidal hands reach out from her sides to hold the child, who turns his back to the viewer and faces his mother. The child displays long, attenuated legs, a slightly projecting posterior, a rectangular body, and a square head. A border surrounds the head of the mother, suggesting that she may be wearing a hooded robe. Size: 8.5" W x 33.125" H (21.6 cm x 84.1 cm); 35" H (88.9 cm) on included custom stand. Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
