South Asia, India, ca. mid-20th century CE; Tibet, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A pair of brass and gilt brass statues of deities that were made for personal shrines or talismans. The larger of the two is a cast-brass Indian statue of Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, seated on a cylindrical pedestal holding implements in his four arms. The other is a miniature cast gilt brass Tibetan finial of a seated deity- perhaps a Boddhisattva- upon a scrolling cloud pedestal. He sits in full lotus with hands clasped in prayer or meditation before him and wears a beaded necklace as well as a Himalayan regional style pointed headdress or ringa crown upon his head. The verso contains a hook for suspension to wear as a pendant. Size (Ganesha): 1.5" L x 3" H (3.8 cm x 7.6 cm) Provenance: private Southern California collection, USA, bestowed 2006; ex-J.
