Ancient Near East, Eastern Anatolia (modern-day Turkey / Armenia), Urartu culture, ca. 9th to 7th century BCE. A broad belt panel fragment hammered from a sheet of bronze that is adorned with dozens of petite, left-facing anthropomorphic and zoomorphic creatures. The foot soldiers are adorned with spears or swords, standards, and conical helmets, and several chariots have drivers as well as bow-wielding archers standing behind them in their carts. Several right-facing animals, perhaps stags, are shown running across the crowded scene. The upper and lower peripheries bear several perforations meant to suspension petite danglers.
