Western Europe, France/ Gaul, Merovingian Dynasty, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A cast brass bird brooch with a ribbed stomach and a dramatic hooked beak, all covered in rich age-commensurate patina. The slightly recessed circular eye was perhaps inlaid with vibrant enamel at one time, and the verso contains the pin clasp and hinge.
