A CHINESE RED-GROUND EMBROIDERED SILK 'DRAGON AND PHOENIX' JACKET. Early 1900s. Fastened to the side with gilt buttons, worked with three beasts to the front panel, five to the back and a phoenix at each shoulder, the mythical animals pursuing the sacred pearl of wisdom among clouds, fire wisps and auspicious symbols in the sky above stylised sea with crashing waves, 97cm, 170cm. Provenance: from the collection of Donald Beith (1878 – 1948), acquired in China in the early 1900s for his wife Florence Beith (1877 – 1966), thence by descent to the present owners via Janet Beith, the novelist and author of No Second Spring (1933) and Sand Castle (1936) who is reported to have worn the robe on weddings and special occasions between the 1970s and 1990s. 1900年代早期 红地刺绣龙凤纹服 来源:来自唐纳比斯收藏,1900年代其夫人弗洛伦斯比斯得于中国。后由作家简奈特比斯继承,在70年代到90年代间用于出席重要场合穿着。
