明末（約1620年），紫砂器由葡萄牙人帶到歐洲，被稱為「朱泥器」或「紅色瓷器」，受到歐洲人歡迎。
清康熙24年清朝海運開禁，紫砂大量銷往國外，其中較大體型的貼花朱泥壺為專歐洲皇室訂燒，也是其中最為昂貴的茶器，本拍品即為當時歐洲皇室用器。
