盖盒木胎，作宝鸭浮水之状，形制独特，极为少见。其身形宽扁，上半身作盖，下半身作盒，以子母口相扣，盒内及底髹黑漆，余部黑漆地上金彩绘饰，双翼舒展，羽毛丰满层层分明，扁喙紧闭，圆眼圆脑，活泼自然，似乎是漂浮在湖中，虽无流水波浪纹的装饰，却有浮动之意境，更显其生动可爱，栩栩如生。
历来鸭形陈设实用器物为文人所喜之品，或因“鸭”字中有“甲”字，且与科甲的“甲”字谐音，故有“一甲一名”之称。“宝鸭浮水”多寓意状元及第和有考必中。
