KATHERINE KOPMAN (1870-1950) NEWCOMB COLLEGE ART POTTERY COVERED JAR / SUGAR BOWL, having blue hand-painted decorations featuring repeated pear-form designs to body with gingko-like leaf design to cover, and glossy glaze. Marks to underside include impressed "NC", "JM" for potter Joseph Fortune Meyer, hand-brushed "KK" for Katherine Kopman, and hand-brushed "D66" for 1901. Newcomb Pottery, New Orleans, LA. Dated 1901. 6 1/8" HOA, 4 1/2" D rim.Provenance: From the private collection of Sarah Donnelly, Esmont, VA.Catalogue Note: Katherine Kopman was a member of the first pottery decoration class at Newcomb College. She received her undergraduate degree in 1895 and continued her studies as a Graduate Art student from 1896-1898. In 1896, Kopman became an Instructor of Drawing at the school. The present piece was likely acquired by Elizabeth Villere Forsyth, the present owner's grandmother, who was a student at Newcomb College in the early 20th century.
