MICHAEL DAHL (SWEDISH-BRITISH, 1659-1743), ATTRIBUTED, PORTRAIT OF PHILIP BYERLEY, oil on canvas, striking three-quarter length depiction of a standing figure wearing large powdered wig, vibrant red coat, and embroidered vest, a rapier at his waist, his right arm resting on a table, inscribed "PHIL: BYERLEY Esq / BROTHER TO COLL. / BYERLEY" upper right. Housed in an old gilt frame, likely a liner for a larger frame. Fourth quarter 17th century. 49 1/4" x 39 1/4" sight, 52 1/2" x 42 1/2" OA.Provenance: From an Eastern Virginia private collection.Catalogue Note: The present painting, was likely commissioned along with a number of other portraits of Byerley family members, by Col. Robert Byerley (1660-1714) for placement in Goldsborough Hall, a large estate in the North Yorkshires. Given that Phillip Byerley, the sitter, died in 1674, the present work is most likely a posthumous depiction. Col. Robert Byerley served in several military campaigns and as a Member of Parliament for County Durham, 1697 - 1710. According to legend, Byerley captured a horse at the Battle of Buda in 1686 and brought it back to his estate, where it became known as the "Byerley Turk", the equine patriarch of all modern thoroughbreds.Shipping Note: IN-HOUSE SHIPPING IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THIS LOT.
