Lid with baluster finial.17.5 cm, 345 g.Provenance:Swiss private collection.According to tradition, such sauce warmers, also known as "argyle", were created on the initiative of John Campbell, the fourth Duke of Argyll (1693-1770). In 1755, the noblemanmissioned the silversmith Fuller White to produce a vessel that would keep the sauces served at the table warm, even in the relatively cool dining rooms of the nobility's estates. This type of vessel was subsequently made in various materials, including porcelain and earthenware as well as in silver. Different warming systems were used. The sauce warmer with Lot No. 1279 has a water tank inside, which can be filled through an opening on the back. The tank of the sauce warmer with Lot No. 1278, on the other hand, is centrally located inside the pot and can be accessed via the lid opening."Argyles" have survived only in small numbers, since many such objects have been reworked over the centuries into coffee pots or teapots. Der Adelige hatte den Silberschmied Fuller White 1755 damit beauftragt, ein Gefäss herzustellen, das die am Tisch kredenzten Saucen auch in den relativ kühlen Speisesäalen der Adelssitze warm hielt. Diese Gefässart wurde in der Folge in diversen Materialien, neben Silber auch in Porzellan und Steingut, ausgeführt. Dabei kamen verschiedene Wärmesysteme zum Einsatz. Der Saucenwärmer mit der Losnummer 1279 verfügt im Innern über einen Wassertank, der über eine rückseitige Öffnung befüllt werden kann. Der Tank von Losnummer 1278 hingegen befindet sich zentral im Innern der Kanne und ist über die Decklöffnung erreichbar."Argyles" haben sich nur in geringer Zahl erhalten, da viele solcher Objekte im Laufe der Jahrhunderte zu Kaffee- oder Teekannen umgearbeitet worden sind.
