Like his father, he learned the carpenter's trade and stayed in Paris in 1767. From 1770, he worked as an ebeniste in Bern, where he also received his master craftsman title in 1780. On 19 July 1812, Johannes Äbersold died at the age of 75. Along with Funk and Hopfengärtner, Äbersold is one of the most important cabinet-makers of the 18th century in the territory of the Old Swiss Confederation. The actual rediscovery of the maître Johannes Äbersold, we owe to the research work of Hermann von Fischer, who in 1998, in the private archives of Oberdiessbach Castle, came across the name of the ebeniste in two account books of Carl Emanuel von Wattenwyl von Belp and was subsequently able to identify five items of furniture based on the information found. Although the research on Äbersold's work is still young, certain distinctive stylistic characteristics are clear: His style appears more generous overall, unlike, for example, the dense inlays and small-scale veneers of Hopfengärtner. Often, Äbersold's front surfaces arebined (especially on chests of drawers) and feature his typical interlocking fillets with integrated rosette. Design features of Äbersold include the recessed drawer top on secretaries, rounded feet, and tapering chamfered octagonal feet.---------------SEKRETÄR À ABATTANTLouis XVI, Bern, um 1780, von Johannes Äbersold (1737–1812) und Werkstatt.Kirsche eingelegt mit teils getönten geometrischen Filets sowie gefriesten Reserven mit verschränkten Ecken und Rosetten.
