The birds are depicted with long legs of a crane, large peacock tail feathers with holes replacing eyespots, long feathers on their breasts and a smallb borrowed from a rooster. The birds, which are depicting various species, are a modern version of the Chinese phoenix Fenghuang. The mythological bird has a long tradition in Chinese culture, according to legends, the Fenghuang is a cosmological creature and it has both male and female aspects. It is supposed to be a shy being living in the sky, only appearing on earth in times of peace and prosperity. The Fenghuang’s presence is reputed to be the beginning of a new era, such as the birth of a virtuous ruler. Since the Shang period, jade pendants representing phoenix birds were used by the royalty and nobility. Thus, the relation of phoenix birds and jade is marked by high morality and loyalty. The Chinese phoenix is a bird of dignity, harmony and balance. It lives on bamboo seeds and does not hurt living creatures. Inbination with peonies, the mythical bird represents the yin principle, while the king of flowers is a symbol of the yang principle.
