Their bodies of slender form are rising from the base to a long waisted neck and a flared mouth. The bodies are painted in underglaze blue with several four-clawed dragons romping through clouds. The necks are covered by a dense leaf design which embraces large peony blossoms. Three bands with patterns of cloud-shaped ruyi, swastika and banana leaf are encircling the shoulders and the flared mouths. On both sides of the necks there are blue-glazed long-feathered birds attached. The feet are painted with two bands of scrolls and lotus leaves. In Europe, the story of monumental porcelain vases goes back to the year 1717, when King August the Strong gave six hundred soldiers or dragoons to King Frederick I in exchange for large-sized Chinese porcelain jars, namely ‘Dragonervasen’ which he placed in his Japanese Palace in Dresden. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, tall vases were produced in China as well as in Japan for export. Since the late 20th century, monumental porcelain vases are produced only in China and Vietnam. Monumental vases are sometimes called ‘palace vases’ or ‘soldier vases’.
