EarthenwareChina, Tang period (618-907)Dimensions: Height 38 cm by 31 cm by 20 cmWeight: 4.4 kilogramsThe figure of a camel, carrying a large bag on its back, is made of red earthenware. The whole surface is speckled with remains of black paint, and in the eyes and open nostrils there are also minor remains of red paint. The head and the neck of the figure are coated with a white slip and yellow paint. Some parts of the figure are encrusted with soil. The camel is standing foursquare on a flat rectangular base. The small head, supported by the strong upward-curved neck, is turned to the left and the mouth is closed. Thick curly hair is covering the spindly forelegs, the front part from the throat to the neck base, and the top of the head. The ears broke off. On the animal’s back, of the two humps, only the curly tops are visible. A thick blanket is laid between the humps and tied with straps around the animal’s rump. Two slightly bowed boards, which are protecting the humps, serve as racks for the tight bag which is hanging to both sides of the camel’s back. There is no horrible mask to ward off evil spirits, as is frequently attached to a pottery camel’s bag. Bactrian camels were most important for transportation along the silk road which connects China with Central Asia. From the Han to the Tang periods, earthenware sculptures of camels were produced as grave goods to be placed in tomb. Particularly in the Tang period, they were regarded as a symbol of wealth because they brought luxury wares to China. In contrast to most of the figures of camels made in the Tang period, this one is not glazed. This figure of a Bactrian camel is represented in a remarkable realistic way.AUCTION DATE:Saturday 23rd April 202211:00 - 13:00Preview:15. April - 17.
