Circa 618-907 AD Formed of terracotta, this figure is in the form of a hollow-moulded horse, modelled in a standing pose, in a yellowish- brown painted body with elegantly arched neck and voluptuous long flowing mane in dark brown pigment, the head painted in white and brown detailing, mouth is slightly ajar, with flaring nostrils, bulging ever looking eyes under heavy eyebrows, muscular naturalistic physique, the tail tied and secured, standing on a trapezoidal base. The saddle and cloth in dark brown pigment; the rider in the form of a musician, fashioned in a red painted robe, with white stylised decoration, green collars, secured by a loose belt over wide trousers. The musician has a bulbous shaped face, his features well-articulated in black pigment, with finely hand painted glistening eyes, thin beard and side facial hair, above the chin below the mouth is a small section of hair, a pointed moustache, coiffure in a high chignon; he holds two implements and holds a conical shaped bowl on his lap, we can assume this is a drum kit. This piece has been precisely dated by means of a Thermo Luminescence analysis carried out by Oxford Authentication. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. The TL certificate with its full report will apany this lot. Size: L:425mm / W:370mm; 3.65kg Provenance: UK private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.
