Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Circa 664-332 BC, Late Dynastic Period A green glazed faience amulet of the Eye of Horus, with black glaze over the pupil and detailed modelling on one side, and an undecorated reverse. A suspension hole runs through the centre. It was believed to have healing and protective powers and was used as a protective amulet. Amulets in this shape were very popular in ancient Egypt for thousands of years, from the Old Kingdom to Roman times. They were worn by the living and also buried with the dead, as their apotropaic significance suited both. For similar see: The Liverpool Museum accession number: M1189Y. Size: L:20mm / W:28mm; 2.6g Provenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired in early 2000s; previously in 1960s UK collection.
