A ROMAN MARBLE SARCOPHAGUS PANELCIRCA 2ND-4TH CENTURY A.D.A section of a sarcophagus panel, depicting two figures both wearing short tunics, the drapery of which is naturalistically carved to emphasize their movement, particularly in the case of the figure on the right who appears to be lunging to his left, both figures with short, drilled hair. The gestures and position of the figures suggest that this is possibly a scene portraying a mythological battle, often a trope of sarcophagus decoration. Mounted onto a custom made rouge marble plinth.32.7cm high. 19.9cm wide excluding base.PROVENANCE:Private Collection Melbourne.Chiswick Auctions, London, Antiquities & Tribal Art Auction, 5 December 2017, lot 125English Private Family Collection Mid '60's-2017
