梅瓶是中国瓷器的典型品种，其自身演变有一个从实用器到花瓶和陈设品的过程。迄今所见最早的瓷梅瓶实物产于唐代。宋时称梅瓶为“酒经”、“经瓶”，或谓因瓶体修长而得名，用于盛酒。大抵到了明清时期，梅瓶才基本变为花瓶和陈设品。梅瓶这一称呼始见于清代文人著述，究竟由何而来已无法考证，但梅瓶的得名与它适于插梅有关，这一点似无疑异。大枝梅花须配高瓶，《引流斋说瓷》论及梅瓶也说：“口径之小，仅与梅之瘦骨相称。”现实中的梅瓶也用来插放其它花卉，或仅作为陈设之用。
