Reliquary; Italy, late 17th century. Rosewood, bronze and oil on copper. Measurements: 80 x 40 cm. The reliquary sits on a rectangular moulded foot and on this foot there is a small shaft. The reliquary itself has a polygonal profile, in which different bronze appliqués representing little angels are placed on the wood. In the centre of the reliquary there is a polygonal receptacle, a small window with a moulded frame that reveals an oil painting on copper depicting an adoration of the shepherds. Around Mary and her new-born Son, Saint Joseph and the shepherds show their fervent devotion to the child. Very close to the group, flying over the scene, and closing the compositional ellipsis, a group of angels show the heavenly complacency before the birth of the Redeemer. This is a theme often repeated throughout the history of art, that of the adoration of the shepherds, which in this case is approached from an intimate point of view, full of eloquent gestures but without the triumphalist character of the more official Baroque, but through a gaze that seeks to make the faithful identify with the scene and be moved by what they see. Dimensions 80 x 40 cm.
