Flemish school; second half of the 17th century. "The Visitation of Mary to her cousin Saint Elizabeth". Oil on canvas. It presents repainting and restorations. Measurements: 83 x 104 cm. Measurements: 108 x 146 cm; 124 x 165 cm (frame). Inscribed in a landscape, and placed in the doorway of a house, a group of figures are arranged. Of the ones that stand out are the Virgin Mary in the centre of the composition, on the right and her cousin Elizabeth who touches Mary's womb. Behind the Virgin and Saint Anne we can see the figures of their respective husbands, who adopt a posture of reverence or greeting. This work depicts the theme that alludes to the visit of the Virgin, already pregnant with Christ, to her older cousin Elizabeth, pregnant by Saint John the Baptist, in the city of Hebron, a theme taken from the Gospel of Luke (1: 39-56). This is the moment when her cousin greets the Virgin in a special way: "Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb". The text of the Bible is followed in detail: Elizabeth's posture responds to the clear intention of emphasising this greeting, but also to questions of hierarchy and deference to the Mother of Jesus, and was a formula adopted and exported, most notably, by the Italian school at the end of the 15th century, although other schools also adopted this posture. The presence of this Zechariah, however, contradicts the texts, but he was nonetheless frequently depicted in this subject from the 6th century onwards. Note the painter's skill in creating these deep perspectives with the landscape in the background. Dimensions 83 x 104 cm.
