Spanish school of the 16th century. Follower of RAFAEL DE SANZIO (Urbino, Italy, 1483 - Rome, 1520); 18th century. "Virgin of the Rose". Oil on pine panel. With ribbons. Frame after Italian models of the 16th century. With faults in the polychromy. The painting has repainting and faults. With restorations. Size: 104 x 78.5 cm; 146.5 x 112.5 cm (frame). The present work closely follows the oil painting entitled "Virgen de la Rosa" or "Sagrada Familia con San Juanito" made by Rafael Sanzio around 1520, nowadays kept in the Prado Museum in Madrid, coming from the royal collections and documented in Spain already in the 17th century. In the centre of the composition is Mary, seated, with the naked Christ Child in her arms; next to her is Saint John, holding out a small handkerchief to Christ. In the left corner is Saint Joseph contemplating the scene. It is highly probable that the present work was copied from the original when it was in the Escorial. Dimensions 104 x 78,5 cm; 146,5 x 112,5 cm (frame).
