Cretan Venetian School; first half of the 17th century. "Adoration of the Magi". Oil on panel. It has damages in the painting, opening of the board and frame in carved wood with old elements. Measurements: 31 x 25 cm; 50 x 39 cm (frame). This work represents the moment narrated in the New Testament, which tells how the three kings from the East, accompanied by a great cortege, present their gifts to the baby Jesus. In this particular case, the scene is reduced, since, as can be seen, the cortege is not represented, only the kings, Saint Joseph, the Virgin and the Child. The Child, in his mother's arms, seems to want to take the chalice or play with the incense and myrrh presented to him by Melchior, who is kneeling before him and who can be identified thanks to the representation of the white beard. The scene is set outside, with a reference to the manger on the right-hand side, as a wooden construction can be seen under the curtain. The kings' robes, with richly coloured and richly embroidered capes, such as Balthasar's adornments of precious stones and jewels, show the luxury of this procession. The scene takes place in daylight, as can be seen by the warm light seen through the opening to the landscape in the last shot. Although some of the hieraticism of early Byzantine art has been lost in favour of a subdued naturalism in the composition and a decorativism in the vein of Italian influence. The scene displays many of the characteristics of this school, which had such an influence on the development of both Cretan and Venetian painting. For this reason, both the composition and the size of the figures are to some extent reminiscent of icon painting. All the figures seem to form part of the same plane, with none standing out above the others, except for the figure of the Child, who is in the centre of the composition and whose nudity creates a contrast with the rest of the figures, who are dressed in colourful, eye-catching clothes, Dimensions 31 x 25 cm; 50 x 39 cm (frame).
