Circle of ANTONIO VAZQUEZ (Valladolid, circa 1485 - after 1563) ; 16th century. "Saint Lambert and Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child". Oil on panel. It shows restorations and damages. It has an antique frame. Measurements: 112 x 39 cm; 133 x 54 cm (frame). In this work the author has worked on both sides of the panel to paint two different scenes. Both images have the same composition based on a large main figure standing on a pedestal, where the name of the sitter can be read. In both paintings the saints are set in a landscape and the artist used a similar colour palette. On one side of the panel is the figure of Saint Anne, the Virgin's mother, who holds the figures of the Virgin and Child in her smaller hands. The other side of the panel depicts Saint Lambert of Maastricht, a bishop and martyr of the late 7th century. The saint is depicted full-length, as if he were a devotional image, on a classical pedestal on which the Latin inscription "SANCTE LAMBERTE / ORA PRO NOBIS" can be read. Antonio Vázquez was a Renaissance painter active in Valladolid, with a vast output and a large clientele. Documentation has been preserved of some of his works (a dispute with Alonso Berruguete, a letter signed by the same master addressed to Emperor Charles V, etc.). In addition to altarpieces, it is known that he worked for the City Council of Valladolid and under the orders of Gaspar de Tordesillas on the arches commemorating the entry of the betrothed of the future Philip II and on the burial mound made for the same princess, Maria Manuela of Portugal. His work is currently conserved in various religious institutions (Church of San Pablo in Valladolid, etc.), as well as in important private collections and in museums such as the National Sculpture Museum in Valladolid, the Archaeological Museum in the same city, etc. Dimensions 112 x 39 cm; 133 x 54 cm (frame).
