Andalusian school, 17th century. "Child with attributes of the Passion". Oil on canvas. Restored. Frame from the beginning of the 19th century. Measurements: 58 x 42 cm; 78 x 52 cm (frame). In this representation of a sleeping child holding in his plump arms instruments of the Passion of Christ or Arma Christi, the formal and stylistic proximity with the Granada painter Juan de Sevilla can be appreciated. A shrewd combination of Murillo, Flemish and Venetian models can be seen in the characterisation of the scene, in which the genre-like treatment of the child with his rosy cheeks set in an idealised landscape is of Flemish origin. The small body is monumentalised in the foreground. Skilfully chiselled with chiaroscuro, it is endowed with an almost sculptural presence, with its fleshly bare foot breaking the two-dimensionality of the painting. Behind him, the forest glade escapes towards a misty horizon, rich in glaucous hues. Dimensions 58 x 42 cm.; 78 x 52 cm.(frame).
