Neapolitan school; 17th century. "Resting from the Flight into Egypt". Oil on oval canvas. It presents repainting. Measurements: 24,5 x 32,5 cm; 55,5 x 66 cm (frame). In this canvas of oval format the author presents us the rest in the flight to Egypt, with the Holy Family in a rocky landscape although it is almost not possible to be appreciated, the three characters in the foreground, in a composition in frieze of classic style. On the left, the Virgin can be seen, although not full-length, seated on the ground, monumental in her representation thanks to the broad drapery of her clothes, with the Child gathered in her arms, whom she holds in front, almost showing him to the faithful praying at the feet of the image. Next to them, but in the background, is Saint Joseph, with his head bent in a reflective gesture, and behind him the figure of God, who seems to be whispering in his ear. However, Joseph is not completely relegated to the background, for although his body is shrouded in shadow, his face is vividly illuminated, so that our gaze is focused on him as the third main point of attention in the composition. His presence would also break the balance of the central triangular composition. The distinctive sign of the Neapolitan school has always been its strong naturalistic character, its warm colour, with reddish and chestnut dominating, and the cultivation, together with the altar painting, of a type of realist painting as its best exponent. In Naples, Ribera's influence was equal to or greater than that of Caravaggio. His naturalism, more sensual and material, more vigorous and vehement, less intellectual than Caravaggio's, eventually became permeable to Venetian and Flemish influences, becoming richer in colour and lighter in technique, especially from 1635 onwards. His most faithful disciples were the Fracanzano family, Cesare (1600-51) and Francesco (1612-56), Bartolomeo Bassante (1614-56), Paolo Domenico Finoglia (1590-1645) and some others who later cultivated special genres such as Aniello Falcone (1607-56), Salvatore Rosa (1615-73) and Luca Giordano. Dimensions 24.5 x 32.5 cm; 55.5 x 66 cm (frame).
