Italian school of the second half of the 17th century. "Self-portrait of the painter". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. With a Hungarian gallery label on the back. With 20th century frame. Measurements: 67,5 x 51,5 cm; 78 x 62,5 cm (frame). As it could be the painter's own self-portrait, we are faced with the monumental and solemn effigy of an elderly gentleman. It is a work determined by the use of precise and defined brushstrokes. The light, which falls on the flesh tones, emphasises the gaze, which is of great psychological depth. A fundamental aspect of 17th-century portraiture was to convey the personality and mood of the sitter, a trait that was not expressed in previous periods, which focused exclusively on external appearance. Dimensions 67.5 x 51.5 cm; 78 x 62.5 cm (frame).
