1986年飞天牌出口茅台酒开始使用铁盖。其实，茅台酒使用铁盖的时间最早可以追溯到1985年，出口国外的飞天茅台酒已经率先换装，使用了铁盖。而主打国内市场的五星茅台酒，则在1986年12月底开始，使用铁盖。从1987年起，出口和内销的茅台酒（飞天和五星）已经全部完成换装，进入全面铁盖时代。比起原来的塑料盖，铁盖最大的好处便是加大了造假的成本，而且能与国际白酒市场接轨，保持统一步调。1986年 -1996年中旬这个时期的茅台酒被称为「铁盖茅台」。 备注：1993年1瓶、1994年1瓶、1996年2瓶
