吴大澂（1835—1902年），字清卿，号恒轩，晚号愙斋，苏州人。曾官至广东、湖南巡抚。善山水、花卉，用笔秀逸，兼善篆刻。喜收藏，精于鉴别，尤能审译古文奇字。澄泥砚为中国四大名砚之一，为泥所制，烧结成器。其质地细腻，犹如婴儿皮肤一般，具有贮水不涸，历寒不冰，发墨而不损毫，因此前人多有赞誉。今日所见古澄泥砚极为稀少，上品更为难求。
