该炉精铜为质，整体铸成，铜兽张口露齿，体态灵动，兽身纹刻画精细，四爪尖锐，名为狻猊，是中国古代神话传说中龙生九子之一，形如狮，喜烟好坐，所以形象一般出现在香炉上，随之吞烟吐雾。古书记载是外貌与狮子相似能食虎豹的猛兽，亦是威武百兽率从之意。常出现在中国宫殿建筑，香炉上。传说具有辟邪的作用，明清时期经常将其做成香熏，既熏香又镇宅。
